Explore the Great Outdoors

Vernon is a convenient gateway to some of the best natural wonders that New Jersey has to offer including: hiking, cross-country mountain biking and fishing.  If you’re looking to hike you can get started right in town at the Vernon Boardwalk. Follow these elevated walking bridges along the Black Creek all the way to the base of the Pinwheel Vista, also known as the Stairway to Heaven.  This 7 mile moderate hike takes you nearly 1,000 vertical feet to some of the best views in New Jersey.

If exploring the woods on wheels is more your speed, Mountain Creek is surrounded by some of the best cross-country mountain biking in the state.  Kittatinny Valley State Park, Waywayanda State Park and Sussex Branch Rail Trail are all an easy drive-to from the resort and offer numerous biking options for riders of all levels.  Visit the Jersey Off Road Biking Association for more details and trail maps of many of the states best riding locations.

Sussex County’s freshwater lakes and rivers are also home to some of the state’s best fishing opportunities.  Vernon’s own Black Creek and Hamburg Mountain Preserve both offer great fishing opportunities as does nearby Waywayanda State Park and Aeroflex Lake at Kittatinny Valley State Park.  Get more details on local fishing locations and stocking schedules on the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife website.

Cap it All Off with a Cold Drink

Unwind or celebrate your day of adventure off with a cold drink or bite to eat at one of our local bars, restaurants or distilleries.  Did you know the Biergarten at Mountain Creek offers over 30 varieties of local craft beers in can and on-tap?  Well, now you do.  The Biergarten will be open Wed-Sun in the spring with Open Mic night every Wednesday night.  If beer’s not your thing, consider checking out Warwick Valley Winery and Black Dirt Distillery just next door in the quant village of Warwick, NY.  Warwick Valley Winery is the home of Doc’s Hard Cider as well as many award-winning varieties of locally grown wines and locally crafted spirits.

With so much to do in the area this spring you’re going to need more than one day to take it all in. Check out our spring lodging deals and specials and start planning your adventure.
